A Grateful Heart

It's been while since I've posted anything because the fall gets SO busy around here. With weddings happening on weekends and my 3 kids running around with all of their activities, it can seem like a whirlwind at times! We've had a great year, though, and I'm thankful. I thought I'd dedicate this post to all of the wonderful brides and families that I was honored to work with this year. I'm also thankful for the many vendors and wedding planners that made the events come together so beautifully. I have cherished the connections that we've made. It has been a joy to work with so many lovely people.

I'm also looking forward to meeting all of you new brides in 2012! I can't wait to dream with you and hear your stories. While I love beauty and am truly inspired by pretty things, sometimes the way things "look" can drive the decision making in this industry. I hope that it can be more than that. A wedding is one of the most important events of a person's life, and I hope that we can all focus on making weddings beautiful not just for the "wow" factor, but most importantly, to help make a lasting memory for the special couple and their families.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to make things meaningful and pretty. What a fun job! I'm so grateful.

Nashville Wedding-Pete & Jennifer

I love weddings. I love thinking about the couple about to make a life-long commitment to each other. I love seeing families and friends, all in one place, ready to support and celebrate. I love sitting next to my husband, holding his hand, remembering moments from our day eleven years ago. I love the music, the flowers, the dresses, the anticipation. One of my favorite moments is looking back at the groom when the bride begins her walk down the aisle. The look on his face is priceless..one of awe, beauty, love.

In late August, we attended (and flowered) the wedding of Jennifer and Pete Peterson. I can honestly say that it was one of my favorite weddings that I've ever attended. It was tasteful, simple, sweet, and very personal. Both writers, Jennifer and Pete, are creative and imaginative people, to say the least! The wedding ceremony, while simply decorated with white calla lilies on the pews and altar, reflected characters in their fiction books! The flower girl carried a violin filled with white daisies that she tossed. Then pirates and little girls covered in flowers, came down the aisle! While the characters gave a sense of humor and creativity to the ceremony, the heart of the service was meaningful, thought provoking, and filled with community. Lee and I walked away thinking more about God and how to better support our friends and each other. It was beautiful.

Jennifer chose to carry white calla lilies, and we accented them with a ruffle of ti leaves around the edges. To raise the eye in the sanctuary, we added calla lilies to the chairs in the aisle, and on the altar, we used more tall callas with bells of ireland and summer grasses. Simple strands of Italian ruscus accented the tall windows.

Who knew that a llama farm could be the perfect location for a wedding! I'm telling ya, Wolf Den Farm in Brentwood, TN is picture-perfect in every way. From the walk-through barn with swings on the porch, to the lovely ceremony site, to the big tree in front of a stream where you get married, and llamas in the meadow...it is a treat!

When Leah and I met to talk about flowers, I was excited right away. She was speaking my flower language...vintage, natural, fluffy, muted pastels, peonies, hydrangea, lavender, milk glass! Then, when she showed me pictures of the location, I knew this would be a fun wedding to flower.

The bouquets were all different, from lavender to pink to yellow to ivory. For Leah's bouquet, we chose a bridal, pastel combination of pale pink peonies, ivory hydrangea, buttery yellow stock, astilbe, gypsophila (baby's breath), lavender, purple scabiosa, and queen anne's lace.

For the ceremony, only simple accents were needed, so we hung jars and bud vases of flowers from the giant tree where the ceremony took place. And for aisle markers, we hung mason jars filled with baby's breath from the chairs.

Leah's aunts took on the job of putting together the reception flowers! How nice is that!! Leah selected milk glass pieces from my collection, and we ordered flowers for the DIY project. They did a beautiful job! There were flowers in every nook and cranny-it made the entire place come to life.

Congratulations, Mark and Leah! You are a beautiful couple inside and out! Many many blessings to you!

Josh 'n Emily

When I first met Emily, we were at a birthday party for a little friend of ours. Emily was quietly moving around the room, taking pictures with her camera, documenting the day for our friend and mother of the birthday girl. We were finally introduced and I learned that we had many of the same friends, but had just never crossed paths-happens a lot in Nashville! I also learned that she was getting married and was planning to do most everything herself. A true creative soul and DIY girl! I told her that if she needed any help with flowers, I'd be glad to help her order what she needed, or even do the tedious work of boutonniere's and corsages.

A few weeks passed, and Emily gave me a call! We met at a coffee shop (my favorite place to meet brides) and began the process of dreaming up what her flowers would look like. Her colors were navy blue, grey, yellow, and white. She had already sent out "save the date" invitations, which she designed herself, and hoped to keep with the same color scheme for the flowers. It was an easy meeting. Because her colors were chosen and she knew what flowers and style she liked (classic with an off-beat twist), we looked through some pictures, I took some notes, and we were off! A few emails back and forth and the decision was made-I would do the bridal party flowers (bouquets, boutonniere's, corsages) and she would DIY the rest.

Aren't the invitations fun?! I love everything about them-the scalloped edge, the scribbly heart, the cursive writing...so much fun.

Mondays and left-overs

I'm not a fan of Mondays. My closest friends know this and often send me texts of encouragement on this first day of the week. It is difficult to get going after a busy weekend of balancing work, family, and friends. I try to have a plan in place to help my unmotivated self, otherwise I'd just stare at a wall and let my kids watch too much TV. Not good!!

Having fresh flowers in the house always helps my mood, and if I'm lucky, I might have a left-over stem or two from an event, especially during busy seasons. If I have a few blooms left over, or even greenery that I like, I'll find a fitting container (most of the time, a bud vase or small recycled jar) and begin cutting stems and placing them around the house. I like having them on the kitchen table, in the bathroom, and on the piano...really anywhere that will have them!

This week, I not only had a few flowers left over from a wedding, but my wholesaler gifted me with some white peonies that were going to go bad in a few days. I was able to remove a few brown spots and, oh my goodness, they were the most beautiful blooms I've ever seen! I took a few to a birthday party and people thought they were fake!! I'm hoping they'll last more than a few days, but even if they don't last past Monday, I will be enjoying them until then. These blooms will point me to the wonder of God's creation. And on a day when a bit of depression could set in, I'll be reminded to have a grateful heart.

Bring on the Peonies!

Who doesn't love peonies? They are fragrant, fluffy, ruffled, sweet, pink, white, red, melon, buttery yellow, full, perfect, lovely, just right,...did I say perfect? Okay, maybe it's just me. I am obsessed with these beauties!

My dad gave me a peony plant several years ago and we've been enjoying the pink, fluffy blooms ever since. The first bloom of the season exploded a few days ago and I rushed outside to lift it onto a support stake. There are two things to note about the peony plant. The bloom is so big and heavy that it falls to the ground unless supported. And, the blooms are usually full of ants. Lovely. As if there aren't enough ants coming into my kitchen already! If you want to cut a bloom from your garden, first clip the stem about 12 inches down and at the "v" of another leaf. If the bloom is full of ants, dunk the entire bloom, upside-down, into a bucket of water and shake it gently until you can see the ants coming out. Then, gently shake the excess water off the bloom and give the stem a fresh cut before placing in a water-filled vase.

If you must have peonies in your bouquet, centerpiece, or your kitchen table..the season for peonies starts NOW-late April through early June.

Blush-Shirley Temple

So, go ahead, the next time you see a white peony, just throw out "Duchess de Nemours." You'll be so proud!! :)

Looking ahead to Summer

Late summer is HOT in the South! We just learn to live in it-sweat and all! Drink a lot of water, go to the pool, wear a sundress. To me, it only seems fitting to create arrangements with hot colors. For an August or September wedding, one of my favorite color schemes includes fuschia, orange, and ivory with touches of green. It almost hints at fall, but adding in a splash of hot pink keeps us in the heat just a little bit longer.

Because of the heat, it is important to choose seasonal flowers that will hold up. Here's a list of seasonal flowers for August and September.

Dahlias-shades of orange, yellow, deep purple, yellow/red combo, red and pinks, white
Cockscomb-fuschia, green, hot pink, red, yellow
Sunflowers
Zinnias-red, pink, yellow, orange, green, white
Allium-tall, slender stem with a purple ball-shaped bloom at the top.
Amaranthus (upright and hanging)-green, burgundy, fuschia
Chocolate cosmos
Gomphrena-orange, purple, red (looks like a miniature strawberry or clover)
Snowberry-pink and white
Tuberose-tall stem with fragrant white blooms near the top.
Gerber daisies
Roses
Mixed herb bouquets

Bridal bouquet-White dahlias, fuschia cockscomb, green succulants (echiveria), ivory hypericum berries, scabiosa pods, hot pink ranunculus, green ornamental cabbage, maidenhair fern.

Grey is growing on me.

I must admit, I'm a bit late to the grey and yellow color trend. It just took me a little time to adjust to it. It seems that grey is the new green accent. I love green. It is my favorite color. But I will say, grey is growing on me. I recently toured my friend Amy's beautifully remodeled home. You really need to check out her website. You'll be inspired! She painted her walls grey, and I love it! It is calming, muted, goes with everything, and also has a modern, but not too stuffy feel to it.

Same with flowers. Grey foliage and berries go with everything! Pair it with white and ivory, pinks, fall tones, purples, blues, and the most popular right now-with yellow.

Here are some options for grey foliage, berries, flowers:

Dusty Miller-can be a little droopy, so be prepared! It has a curly look, a bit like an oak leaf.

Lambs Ear-has a wide, velvety leaf, and a bit more sturdy.

Seeded eucalyptus-the leaf is hearty and is silvery-green.

Silver Brunia-a berry that works wonderfully in bouquets and boutonniere's.

Echiveria blooms-some varieties of this succulent have a silver-green hue to them.

A fresh look at Spring.

A color trend keeps coming up in meetings with brides-deep blue, yellow, white, and grass-green. For some reason, it reminds me of my mom's blue willow china that she used for holiday celebrations when I was a kid. But the green gives it a new look-fresh and chic. I love it! It is important to classify the shade of green here. I call it "grass green." Not new, light, Spring green, but the rich, Summer grass-green that we know here in Tennessee. The kind you want to have a picnic on, the kind that says warm weather is here for a while. Umm, can you tell I have a thing for green? That's for another post!

It is always quite a production delivering this piece for the Lawn & Garden show. The show always falls on the same week as my oldest daughter's birthday, and somehow, the day for delivery also falls on the day that my younger kids aren't in school! This is my life...I'm not complainin'...just sayin'!! Thank you to our dear friend, Randy Williams, for helping me get the thing into the building and then kindly watching my kids in the car while I added finishing touches. It was worth all the work! For some crazy and sometimes unfortunate reason, I work best under pressure.

The first couple of pictures were taken in my front yard to capture the details of the arrangement. My friend and neighbor, Kelly, helped me carry this thing around, from garage to car, to yard, back to car...kids belted in their seats and a couple of moms carrying around a board with a tree trunk on it...I'd love to know what the other neighbors were thinking!

"Here we grow again," the theme for the Lawn & Garden show this year, took on new meaning for me as I thought through what to create. Life and growth, love, patience, and joy spring up out of the dirt. The bulbs from my daffodils and tulips wait in the ground all summer, fall, and winter to push back up again in the spring, coming alive with color, fragrance, and beauty. What a wonderful image. I feel like I've been in the dirt and muck this winter, and thank God, life and growth are coming up out of it!!

I wanted to show this in my arrangement. An outdoor scene, the tree trunk, the moss, the quince branches budding and waiting to pop with bloom. The orange parrot tulips inspired the color scheme. I love how, when massed together, the green carnations look like a ground cover. Yellow and white button pom-poms offer color and texture. And the tulips-ruffled, opening, growing taller and taller, reaching toward the sun...beauty from ashes and dirt.

Growth

I've been thinking a lot about growth lately. Going through a bout of personal growth myself, I have found it to be rocky, hopeful, emotional, and wonderful all at the same time. Life takes turns like that-many times with change comes hardship, but with hardship can also come growth. It's good...and hard!

This week, Nashville's 11th annual Lawn & Garden show will be taking place down at the fairgrounds. The theme for this year is "here we grow again." I am honored to be in a group of wonderful florists around town who will be displaying their floral talents in a floral gallery. It is always so much fun to meander through the gallery, in wonder, at the amazing talent in Nashville.

Because of the theme, I've been thinking about my floral piece and how it can reflect growth. I'm excited about the inspiration that is coming and how I might be able to express my personal experience in art form. I've never really considered myself an artist, but I do think it is important for things to have meaning.

So here's a glimpse of what might be coming...it won't take shape until I have my hands on it, but the elements will be...a tree trunk, flowering branches, moss, flower heads...and tags or maybe wooden pieces with WORDS!! Words of inspiration, of growth. Gardens need inspiration, imagination, patience, love, tenderness...and we do too.

I was so excited to work on this wedding at the Traveller's Rest. It is a beautifully hidden spot in Nashville..rustic, with an old Plantation feel. I love it! Amy was so much fun to work with and we just clicked when we talked on the phone! I loved her style and flower choices immediately! She lives in California, so we planned everything long-distance. The arrangements were full of ranunculus (Amy's favorite flower), peonies, lavender, bay leaf, rosemary, and fern curls.

Sneak peek!

Here's a little sneak peek into the wedding I'm working on this weekend. This bouquet was done for the bride's portrait session-this is a great way to do a practice run on your bouquet! The bride loved this bouquet, but for her wedding day, she decided to go with the same flowers in brighter colors. Can't wait to put this one together again!

We spent Easter this year with close friends, and for their table, I put together an arrangement of brightly colored tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinth, and hosta leaves. I think I was inspired by the jelly beans my kids were finding in their Easter baskets and eggs!! Yum!

This wedding was so special because Jessica is my sister!! What a treat to design the florals for her special day! I can't take all the credit, though...Jessica has a great eye for design, and she knew exactly what she wanted!! We had so much fun and are just so thankful for her new husband, Brian. Congratulations and many blessings Jess and Brian!

Jessica's bouquet was filled with ivory and green hydrangea, blush pink and ivory roses and hot pink spray roses.

So classic and beautiful!

Bridesmaid bouquets were a combination of green hydrangea, hot pink roses to match the dresses, ivory spray roses, and blush spider mums.

Simple mason jars hanging from shepherd's hooks lined the walkway to the church. We also wrapped the railings to the entrance of the church with greenery garlands and hung simple greenery wreaths on the doors.

My father used to grow gladiolus in his vegetable garden, so I wonder if memories of those beautiful, long stemmed flowers coming into our house inspired Jessica's choice for the church decor! I also had white gladiolus in my wedding...it felt like a sweet tradition! I loved how the tall stems framed the isle, and the design of the flowers clustered together in the altar arrangements felt fresh and modern.

I've been collecting antique milk glass containers for a few years now, so I loved it when Jessica decided to use them for her reception centerpieces! We filled the vessels with green hydrangea, ivory and hot pink roses, and blush spider mums.

Amanda & Jim's florals

Amanda and Jim were married at the rustic Tap Root Farm in Franklin, TN. It was a beautiful, breezy summer day, and what a cool wedding venue! The huge, screened-in porch with adjoining pool and patio were beautifully set for the ceremony and reception. We used lots of candlelight, so there was a romantic glow as the party began!

Congratulations Amanda and Jim!

This picture is just stunning! Thank you Lillian for capturing the color and detail of these flowers so beautifully! Amanda's bridal bouquet is filled with green hydrangea, fuschia dahlias and roses, pink orchids, and touches of purple campanula.

Jim's boutonniere was a pink cymbidium orchid bloom to match Amanda's flowers, and the groomsmen had green berries to match the bridesmaids.

The bridesmaid's bouquets looked amazing against their fuschia dresses. The bouquets were filled with ivory hydrangea, fuschia dahlias and roses, green berries, and green orchids.

Isn't she adorable carrying a kissing ball down the isle? I love this choice for young flower girls, it's so easy for them to carry and looks so so sweet!

For the tables, varying heights of cylinder vases were filled with orchids and ti leaves and then topped with floating candles. The look was modern, chic, and romantic.

Late Summer Blooms

When I think of late summer, I think of buckets filled with huge sunflowers! When I worked at Import Flowers, a flower wholesaler here in Nashville, starting in late July, we would start getting sunflowers in from a local grower. This sweet farmer, Manuel, probably in his late 60's, would haul in the biggest, most beautiful sunflowers and wildflowers I've ever seen! Most of the sunflowers stood as tall as I am! I still love going to Import Flowers this time of year to pick up bunches of those sunflowers to arrange in vases for special orders that come in. If I'm lucky, Lou, the owner of Import Flowers, will send a bunch home with me to enjoy. Here are some samples of a few recent arrangements I put together for some new moms in the hospital. Something like this would cheer up any hospital room or any kitchen for that matter!

Palmore-Weinman wedding, June 7

This wedding took place at the Governor's Club in Brentwood, one of my favorite locations in Nashville for a wedding ceremony and reception. Not only are the grounds and historic Pleasant Hill mansion beautiful, but the staff is always a pleasure to work with!

For the table centerpieces, silver mint julep cups were filled with pink peonies, pink roses and spray roses, green hydrangea, and green orchids.

The bridal bouquet was filled with varying shades of pink flowers and touches of green, while the bridesmaid's bouquets (below) were filled with green flowers.

Bridesmaid bouquets filled with green hydrangea and orchids really popped against their hot pink dresses!

The green orchid boutonniere's co-ordinated perfectly with the bridesmaids' bouquets.

Clusters of stargazer lilies, pink roses, and green hydrangea adorned the gazebo.

I love this gazebo at the Governor's Club...it is the perfect spot for a wedding ceremony. Instead of pew markers, we lined the isle with piles of hot pink rose petals.

This wedding took place in one of the beautiful gardens at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Art Museum.

The bridal bouquet filled with pink and white peonies.

Ceremony arrangemtents in my favorite style and with my favorite flowers...peonies, hydrangea, and roses!

Isle markers were hanging mason jars filled with peonies, hydrangea, and roses.

For the centerpieces, we stayed with the theme from the ceremony.

Stripling/Riggs' Wedding

For the centerpieces, antique milk glass containers were filled with the flowers of the day...green hydrangea, ivory roses, white peonies, green hypericum berries, and ranunculus. The setting of the wedding was a friend's beautiful home in historic Belle Meade. A beautiful day, location, and bride!

The bridal bouquet was filled with green hydrangea, white peonies, ranunculus, and lily of the valley. The bride wanted to stick to a simple color palette...green, white, and ivory. It was beautiful and elegant!

Bridesmaid bouquet's complimented the bridal bouquet with hydrangea, peonies, and hypericum berries. You can't see it in this picture, but the stems were wrapped in the same green and white striped ribbon as the groom's boutonniere.

The boutonniere's were simple and masculine. Green hypericum berries for the groomsmen and white ranunculus for the groom. I added a green and white striped ribbon to the groom's boutonniere for an added detail.

The cake was made by a friend of the bride, and it was simply beautiful. I wanted to add simple accents, so I placed a few peonies and roses on top, then scattered smaller roses and ranunculus on the layers.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Perfect Wedding Guide bridal show! For the show, I wanted to give you a sense of the style I especially love which is an antique, vintage garden feel. I used my collection of antique milk glass and filled the containers with loads of green and white hydrangea, ivory roses, lilies, orchids and tulips.
